How to Become a SPD Technician

There are a few steps in becoming a SPD technician.

Diploma

The first step is to get your high school diploma or if you quit high school, then you will need to get your GED. It will look really good if you have a strong background in science while you are in school.

Courses

The second step is to take some certification courses. This can be done at your community college, career college, or even through an online course. There are several schools that will offer the online courses to you. The career colleges will take about 10 week for you to get your certification while the community colleges will take up to 1 to 2 years based on what they offer. There are some sterile processing technician programs that will offer the more traditional instruction that is a combination of the hands on training inside of the surgery center, medical center, or a hospital. You will have to check with all of the schools that are in your area to see what they offer. The college should also have a website that will have all of the information that you need on it. It is very important to make sure that the college is accredited so that you know that it will be recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

When you are applying for these programs, you will need to fill out an application, provide the college with all of the required documents for admission, and take their standardized test. This test will test out the competence of the applicant and show their ability to complete all of their coursework so that they can succeed in the program. There are several things that you are going to learn in these programs. Some of these things are going to include human anatomy, infection control, disease control, microbiology, sterilization methods, safety and risk control, surgical terminology, and surgical instrumentation.

Experience

The third step is to get all of the on the job experience that you can. There are two main ways that you will be able to do this. The first way is through the official certification programs that offer the on the job training. The second way is through getting a job that is related to the sterile processing technician.

Certification

The fourth step is to earn the certification through either the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution. The certification is required by the law in only two states. These two states are New York and New Jersey. But most of the time, the employer that you might be looking to hire you will require you to have the certification. There are two types of certification that you might be required to have based on what the employer is looking for. The two types of certification are CBSPD or IAHCSMM. You will have to check with each one of the associations to get all of the information that you need.

By following all of these steps, you will be able to become a SPD technician. As long you are able to do plenty of research on the schools that are in your area, then you will be able to find the one that will work the best for you. You can also talk to an admissions specialist, who should be able to answer any of the questions that you might have about the school and the certification. This is a very rewarding career that you will be able to get a lot of benefit from if you enjoy the job.
